Hello there! Wow, it has been almost a year since I posted anything here...Thank you for not giving up on Msethelcupcakes! Though i dont have any updates here, the orders and inquiries never really stops...thank you for your Supports!

I would from time to time, upload pictures of my cakes or cupcakes here. You would also noticed that I have changed the layout of this blog...I hope you like the new look :)

Hi hi hi all! Some of you may have noticed that my blog has been 'stagnant' for quite a while (what else is new right...).

Actually, I have been busy trying to get my shop ready for the past 2 months or so.....Yesss, my shop! I have always had this idea in mind, i.e to bring in all those fancy tools and accessories for cake decorating which are not readily available in KK. Made this over the weekend. Was glad that I managed to complete in on time, despite having problems with my fondant ingredient (ran out of gelatine...managed to get it at (945pm on friday night and made my fondant around 11pm!) Luckily, I managed to get some one to help with the cake board and cupcakes! (Thanks Flora).

Bibiana wanted a simple wedding cake for her wedding reception at the Church . Pink and white were the theme colors.

I just love the topper, which was provided by the bride.

Football Cake

This is my 2nd attempt in decorating a 3D football cake. The first one, made last month, for my son's 4th birthday. Unfortunately, due to some "technically not right" techniques, my fondant slide down the ball...My brother commented that it looked like a punctured ball instead! Haha, but of course, my son didnt mind at all! As long as there's a cake for him, he would be more than happy!

This was made for my nephew, Timothy. Last year, it was a set of football cupcakes..

This year, same theme! But he has upgraded himself to a big fan of Spain team. So, cake pun upgrade lah..^_^

Some cupcakes I did last month for a 1 year old boy. It was lots of work to do the toppers, but I was happyon how they turned out, especially the sheep. I personally love Shaun the Sheep. However, DH commented that they dont look like Shaun, but looks like Shirley instead! (For those who knows the characters in Shaun the Sheep would agree with DH, I suppose)

Ok, enough about Shaun, lets look at Shepphard's cuppies! I only took a few pictures to represent all 150 of them.

I guess, I was very lucky to receive this order, for a couple who is not fussy about the cake design. I was given the freedom to choose any design a 3 tier wedding cake in such a short notice (well, for a wedding cake newbie like me, 4 days is a short notice...seriously)...as long as I sticked to the theme color.

Since it was held in a big hall, I had to make sure the cake is not "drowned" or dwarfed by the size of the hall. I hope it didn't.

I will not claim this design to be 100% mine...it was adapted from a Wedding Cake magazine, courtesy of Miss D.

I only noticed the base board was 2 inches smaller than it was supposed to be...

It was a challenge doing this crawling baby figurine..yeah, she is SUPPOSE to look like she is crawling on 4. Oh well, I hope to do better next time!

Breaking the silence (again!) with a black and white themed wedding cupcakes and cake.
The day these were delivered, the sky was dark and gloomy! At the same time, the cakes had to travel up north...few hours of drive from KK. Was so worried that they (the cakes lah) wont make it..But of course, judging from the pictures sent by the bride, the cakes were safe!

Wanted to have butterflies embossed on the fondant..but i guess, I was not fast enough as the fondant have dried when I attempted to stamp it....only managed to leave faint butterfly marks...

Another cake with animal figurine.... Honestly speaking, I was kind of puzzled when Pam requested for elephant figurines for her engagement cake. After seeing some cake samples, I got excited, as they (elephants.....) are just so adorable! I had to make sure the elephant look happy and really hope they look happy!

Eva's First Birthday

How time flies.....I did Eva's 1 month celebration cake last year and without us realizing it, she turned 1 already.
Eva loves Winnie the Pooh. I was given the freedom to design her cake..with 1 condition: must have winnie the pooh figurine! Luckily, I managed to find an on-line tutorial on how to make one.

My biggest challenge was, forming pooh's face and making sure her ears sticked!

My Sis's Wedding Cake

This is the cake, which kept me busy in the first week of May! Since this would be for my Sis, I have to make sure it turn out nice.:-). The theme color is brown and white. I love this color combo...my first attempt at using Edible image on wedding cake...and my first 5 tiered cake too :-D.

The reception was held at my parent's residence...It was raining very heavily 3 hours before the function..thus my fondant became wet and sticky!

Deco was made of gumpaste and ribbons and more ribbons (end up using more than I should...aishhh)!

The monograms were made of Edible images too.

(yeah, we have a pink wall at home!!)

I enjoyed the time spent molding the "faces" of Joanne's family member, and use it to decorate the birthday cupcakes for her dad. No pictures or description were given as a guide. So, I just go with the flow of me own fingers and brain juice!

Abeygail's 1st birthday cuppies...No specific theme requested by Abey's mom. I decided to use Edible images for the animals. It is so much easier to use this kind of decorating method..as I could just print whatever images I wish to use...so much better also because my customers will not suffer from having their cakes decorated with pictures drawn by me!(Did I mention before that I dropped Art from my Form 3 and From 5 exam?) haha!

Wish i have a better pics where the cuppies were arranged nicely....huhuhu..As always, the pics were taken just before I delivered the cuppies.

Feb is gone...and March is here. So many events took place in Feb, at least, for me and my family members. Events which we do not want to remember, yet, cant forget. Well, life goes on and so does my bake-decorating projects.
To break the almost-a-month hiatus, let me start with this football themed set. Ordered by Rose for her dad and Harold. Cupcakes were Vanilla with choc cheese and the fondant covered cake , a carrot cake.

If I'm not baking and decorating cupcakes, I'll be baking chocolate cake...been baking lots and lots of chocolate cake lately and this is one of them. Received lots of positive feedback for this particular chocolate cake. No complicated deco required esp when it's covered with rich chocolate ganache.

This was baked and decorated for a couple whom celebrates their wedding anniversary and birthday in the same month...how lucky

Love this color combo.

I find it difficult to come up with color schemes for 'men and boys', sometimes....When it comes to decorating cakes, most of the time, the color pink and white will normally be on top of my "color list".....pink and other similar shades are just soooooo pretty on cakes. But of course, who said cakes are only for the "softer" gender....

I just looooove lamingtons. My sister in law used to bring back store-bought lamingtons from Australia...those were so long ago, when she was studying there. But I only learnt and tried to make some quite recently.

Life is more meaningful when you have thoughtful friends! The cake is ordered as a wedding gift by the school friends of the bride..very thoughtful kan...

This cake travelled all the way to Kota Belud last saturday, during heavy rain! I was worried that the decorations would sag and turn soft..saw the picture posted by one of the bride's friend..huhuhu, my butterflies lied flat on the cake! It has been raining everyday in KK. I feel sorry for some people who were decorating wedding cakes during last weekend. Must be very challenging..wet weather is a no friend of fondant cake..everything would turn shiny, sticky and saggy..yikes!!

Anniversary Cupcakes

Red butter cream.......this is always a challenge! No matter how much colorant you add, it wont turn into that sharp-deep-red color!

Here's why:

I used cooked sugar in my butter cream. The ratio of butter to sugar is much higher than in butter icing (where icing sugar is added into butter). Fondant and butter icing absorb and 'show' the red colorant better than buttercream due to the icing sugar content.. ..hope anyone who reads this would understand why, sometimes, the buttercream on the cake just dont look red enough...

enough.

but hey, look on the brighter side...at least you dont stuff so much colorant into your digestive system!

Yayy! 2009 is coming to an end. My FB page is full of new year's wishes. Here are some of my fav:

a year has gone, another ahead.. CHEAPER was yesterday, MORE is tomorrow ... so is it really "Happy" New Year?

Today is the last day of the year 2009.. lets celebrate the good things we had and review the bad things we done.. May 2010 be a GOOD year to all of us!!!

to those who have yet to fulfil their 2009 resolution, you have yet another 12 hours 55 minutes to do so.....HURRY!!! coz time is running out.

Looking back on the months gone by, as a new year starts and an old one ends. We contemplate what brought us joy & we think of our loved ones and our friends. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I have no idea how a Subaru (sporty) look like.....and though i drive a car, I can never imagine what the clutch looked like (except for the clutch pedal of course)

Luckily Apple send me some pictures....I was struggling with the shape of the car. Initially, it looks more like a Proton Saga!!. Tried to adjust here and there but in the end, I left it as it was.

Have not been lucky lately with fondant covered cakes...wonder why ( or may be i should stick to making cupacakes only...*wink*).

During delivery, the top tier kind of moved a few inches towards the edge! Mitch was already at the pick up venue. No wonder he was kind of speechless when he saw his engagement cake...Well, to make the cerita drama shorter, I had to bring it back, redo the bottom tier and hand it back to Mitch in 2.5 hours! The incident was a blessing in disguise, as I liked the redo-version better :-).

White and gold color scheme. Cakes were chocolate moist cake (maaan, the crumbs from the cake were driving me crazy)

The slowness of the internet connection at home lately has not been motivating me to update my blog with pictures.. (excuses, excuses...but seriously!).

To break the more-than-2-weeks hiatus, here are different cake for 2 different baby girl, on a 2 different weekends.....did this few weeks back.

This is for my cousin's first-born...Cake is butter walnut...yes, I know, you have seen the flowers before..hehehehe

This one was made for Doris' baby. Choc moist cake with choc ganache. Did the gumpaste baby shoes for the 1st time...kind of senget a bit. But still, looks cute ...at least from far..:-)

I love decorating cakes for babies. Eva's parents requested something simple in pink and purple. For baby girl, there are lots of 'decorations' you could actually do..booties, baby blanky, pink teddy bears, flowers and the list goes on.

For Eva, a first born to George and Jofanna, we finally settled for pink and purple daisies for the cutting cake and small white flowers for the cupcakes, on top of the pink and purple swirl.

I just loved decorating cupcakes with fondant. Simply because, I could be more creative.....and the best thing is, my kitchen, work station and sink are not covered with butter cream (I never enjoyed the washing part, to be honest)!!

Normally, when some one order my cupcakes for the first time, I would ask which icing would you prefer, the 'traditional' butter icing or 'butter cream;? Butter icing is firmer, grainy and very sweet while butter cream is lighter in texture and less sweet. For me, its a matter of personal preference. So, do let me know which one pleases your palate the best!!!

I was in a big rush, to complete my second order (for Nina)...didn't even have to time to take a decent shot of the cupcakes. 38 cuppies to celebrate the colorful 36 years of her life..Happy Birthday my friend and may He grant you many with more beautiful years to come..that's for the mama...

As for the son, so many dramas in getting the Ben10 image for the cake...had to use an alternative image (I made sure it was safe to put on the cake, of course!) since the one's I ordered didnt arrive on-time (despite the tagline "Dijamin Sampai Esok' by Pos Malaysia...grrrrrr).

Glad that Pascal liked the cake...(except the candle, he said......Ok, will use diff candle next time, k?)

Got the confirmation of this order less than 24 hours to the time I was suppose to deliver it! Since time was not on my side, I had to create something simple with whatever I had on hand, which consist of some balls of gumpaste and fondant..only. Did simple blossoms ...not easy without a proper veining tool...

Emma Goes to Hollywood

I was challenged to bake and decorate a guitar cake for a 12 year old girl who wants a purple and white guitar for her birthday cake. Was agonizing for the past 2 weeks on whether I would be able to execute this project successfully. The person who ordered this (U.S.A) was an old school friend, known her since we were in our teen (was not given a chance to even turn this order down!...huhuhuu)

Spent about 4 hours on the guitar cake.....sighhh. So much flaws....the only consolation is, it does look like a guitar!!! LOL

At the same time, Emma's mum is also a sept baby, so I was to bake a separate cake for May. Both cakes are kind of a birthday present for them, from U.S.A . Such a generous person you are, La.

Delivered the cakes this evening to the venue of the party and the theme was Emma Goes to Hollywood (thus, the guitar, I suppose)

It is always fulfilling, when you know your work is appreciated by others, especially those who received it as a gift. Fui Fui and me have been firing emails to each other since July about this particular order. Didnt know what to decorate them with, since Fui fui didnt have any specific design in mind and I was given the freedom to come up with anything as long as the main color is pink......For Val and Eric...from Fui Fui.

Got this order from Niza...the theme were discussed in details with her.....over a few days!

I hope I didnt dissappoint her...It is always challenging when coloring butter based icing, as compared to fondant...in the end, u get orangy red instead of red-red. Hmmm...too much colorant wont be good. At the same time, some coloring agent will alter the taste of the butter icing. As for me, I only use good quality color paste/gel...either Wilton or Americolor..though these are trusted brands (means it is 'safe', I wont take the chance of using too much of it).

Back to Niza's cakes. They travelled all the way to Kuching, naik bilun...hehehe. Here they are:

Wedding Anniversary Cuppies

So excited about this project! Though it was tiring ( not to mention the late nites...), I was quite pleased with the result. They are my first ever (real one's, okay, ^-^)wedding-themed cupcakes. All 70 pieces were decorated with fondant. Cuppies were vanilla and Chocolate banana. Color scheme chosen by Avila were green and white and teeny-weeny bit of other colors to complement the main colors. I chose light yellow and light pink and heres the result:

Lena (one of my loyal customer *wink wink*) wanted to surprised her friend on her b'day with a set of my cucpakes. I personally sent the 1st set to her office (pheww......punya jauh office dia). Glad that the cupcakes survived the whole journey (thanks to the ever-so-useful cupcakes holder) and of course, very glad to hear from Lena that Clare, the b'day girl was excited to have received such a gift from Lena.

As for the 2nd set, its from the same person to the same b'day girl, for the b'day party, in the evening. Theme is 'sexy'........

This cake is officially my post no.1 for wedding cake. Made of Carrot walnut cake and Butter cake with choc chips. Couple got married married on the 8 of Aug, 2009.

I was given lots of 'freedom' in choosing the design, so long as the theme remains blue and white.

Sexy red lips and cute hearts...these were created esp for Chip and Chut (cute names kan....), to celebrate their 1st annivesary.

Was so 'proud' that the lips and hearts turned out like how I wanted them to be.......however, little did I know, that it was too heavy for the buttercream and it slid off during the short drive, when I delivered them :-(( sighhh......My apologies chipnchut...I hope u still enjoyed them cuppies despite the 'displaced' hearts and lips.

I spent hours on this one......all because the weather these days were so not 'figurine' friendly...grrrr. Broke her left arm, her thigh, her wings......almost gave up! But of course I didnt, for Anya's sake, I had to presevere...hehehe.

Squire's Kitchen

It never occured to me before, that one day, I would mess my hands with cakes and icings on a regular basis! You know what?? I should have done this since long time ago.....

Anyway, back to this Squire's Kitchen thingy....

I was a bit hesitant in 'investing some money' on this particular new skill. But family members have been pretty encouraging. Like what my sister said, there's nothing better than investing in new skills! Indeed and I never regretted attending this course

Spent 5 fruitful and wonderful days (and tiring of course...) with Rosalind Chan, the best facilitator you could ever have, when it comes to cake decorating.

Pixies time....didnt get to 'immortalized' all of my so called masterpiece (ahakkk....!). there were times, when I didnt even have the time to grab my camera, due to time constraint...sifu keep on giving us things to do and things to complete.....everything needs to be fast, fast, fast.

In the 5 days, we were required to decorate 4 cakes, including some flowers a greeting card a pair of bride and groom with medium such as Royal Icing, Fondant, pastillage, gumpaste and Silkpaste

Ok ok, without further ado:

Motifs done with Color flow, royal icing.

Color flow collar for 1 of the 3 tier cake. This is very fragile. 1 wrong move and everything is history!

For the middle tier, we were taught to do string works with tipe 1L!! thats smaller than a tip/nozzle no.1..surprisingly, I enjoyed doing, though, after an hour we start to get double vision.

Each of the scallop below consist of 6 different strings. 1 scallop breaks, the whole series of scallops would break too! Luckily it didnt happen to me

colored the 'bowl' with color flow,

built "bridges" and to connect the cake to he scallops....and tiny dots along the lines

Supposed to add some motifs along the top ridges, just didnt have the time...sighhh

For the top tier, covered the side of the cake with 'smocking' work. It starts with this,

and end up like this!! I like this one.

And the lowest tier, frill works and ribbons insertion

A separate cake, covered with royal icing (real cake and covered with marzipan). Board covered with royal icing too. The motifs u saw earlier are now on the cake

The item on the right is a greeting card made with pastillage. Patch work poppy as decoration. Painted with edible paint. On the right, is my not so 'siap' trinket box cover, decorated with folk art painting.....really put my not so 'happening' painting skills to test!

Now, the most fun part. To get these couple done, it involved some sweat, heart stopping moments, palpitations and the best part was, lots of laughter!. My friend said mine looked like the actors of the "Living dead"....hahaha, yeah, they do look scary, I agree. In KL, these bridal couple alone could cost RM250.00 per pair you know!...(not mine, of couse lah).

Gumpaste flowers...petals of poppy and roses....

My flower arrangement....mind the terbalik rose petals....heheheh

And finally, my fellow course-mates with the Master...some came all the way from Maldives, Singapore and Brunei.....

Blue Cupcakes

Who said you cant color your buttercream blue???? Many cake decoraters faced this dillema. We always end up with green buttercream when we tried to color it blue. The reason? Butter has a yellowish tinge. So Yellow + Blue = Green lah! Most of the time, cake decoraters would use shortening to replace butter in their buttercream, to get that nice baby blue shade. But we can only do this if you are willing to forgo the buttery taste, which is almost non-existent (u get that cloying taste on your tongue instead..yewww) if shortening is used as the ingredient in the buttercream.

But this time, I managed to break into the mystery of this and get this nice shade of blue instead.

Princess Jasmine and the fairy

It has been a rather busy week for me...can't stand the sight of another cupcake!! Anyhow, here's the set of cuppies, which kept me glued to my working table and kitchen for days

......despite all the dramas, sweat and tears (yeah, well... almost ^-^), I managed to finished them cuppies on time for Sriya Jasmine's very 1st b'day party.

The theme is fairies....my very first attempt at human figurine, unfortunately, only managed to come up with 1 fairy...a very time consuming affair. Jasmine's Mom requested to include Disney's Princess Jasmine too. Since I have no idea how to do a Princess Jasmine figurine (not yet anyway. *wink**), I decided to use chocolate image transfer method instead.
